Local Information
Second Valley is located on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia, approximately 100 km south of Adelaide. It is well-known for its picturesque beach and steep coastal cliffs, and it is a popular place for fishing, swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving.
Whilst exploring the Fleurieu coastline in 1836 Colonel William Light speaks of the location as the “Second Valley”. The name derives from it being the next valley north of Rapid Bay, where Light established his initial camp on the South Australian mainland. The township was also known as Finniss Vale and Randalsea, but the name Second Valley has stuck to the present day.

Today Second Valley has three sites listed on the State Heritage Register:
The Second Valley jetty and causeway, which were established in 1855 for ships to berth and load produce from the region
Leonard’s Mill, originally established as a flour mill in 1858 by John and James Leonard
Geological formations along the cliff line
Local services and facilities
For local residents and visitors there are a wide range of services available in the area for food, meals, accommodation, cleaning, recycling, and tradespeople. A directory of services is published annually by the Second Valley Progress Association.

The Second Valley Soldiers’ Memorial Institute is available for hire by the community for functions and events and is also the location of the Second Valley market, held on long weekends throughout the year.
